A SIX-DECADE LEGACY

Are you wearing the right fit?

"As our mentor Mr A.K. Hangal (veteran actor and a Master Tailor) always said: 'Go well dressed' - which means always dress yourself perfectly with the right fit and color aesthetics."

Post-independence was a booming time for the tailoring industry in Mumbai. Being the commercial capital of British India, tailoring flourished. One person with this rare talent of being a 'Master Tailor' was veteran actor, freedom fighter, and Padmabhushan Shri A.K. Hangal. Born and brought up in Peshawar, he was a perfectionist in 'Bespoke Tailoring' of his time. He learnt the art of British cutting in Pakistan and later migrated to Mumbai. In the late 50's, Mr. MN Rao worked under Mr. Hangal for many years and gained his valuable knowledge and expertise.

We at MN Rao Tailors have kept this 6-decade-old legacy of 'Master Tailoring' alive. It all started with our mentor Shri A.K. Hangal and his loyal customers whom we find ourselves lucky to serve till today. Today's generation of tailors prefer to call themselves designers, but often lack technical cutting skills. In most European countries, the term 'Master Tailor' is only given to those who master pattern drafting, cutting, and refittings.

Following Mr. MN Rao's legacy are his two sons, Mr. Vinayak & Mr. Madhusudan Rao. Having 35 years of experience in tailoring, Mr. Vinayak Rao took a course with one of the finest hands in British tailoring, Professor Andrew Ramroop OBE, Founder and Principal of the Savile Row Academy, London. Professor Ramroop took the first course on spreading the secrets of Britain's finest tailoring in India, recognizing Mr. Rao's pursuit of professionalism.

Six Decades of British Cutting & Master Bespoke Artistry

“A true bespoke garment is not merely measured; it is sculpted to the unique architecture, stance, and personality of the wearer.”

Founded on the principles of British architectural pattern drafting, MN Rao Tailors represents an unbroken lineage of master cutters. Mentored by freedom fighter and veteran master tailor Shri A.K. Hangal in the late 1950s, our atelier upholds the sacred rigor of Savile Row tailoring in Mumbai.

Today, second-generation master cutters Vinayak and Madhusudan Rao combine traditional floating horsehair canvassing with direct mill sourcing from Biella and Scotland, eliminating middlemen to deliver Savile Row caliber tailoring directly to our discerning patrons.
